About Chennai

Chennai, also known as Madras is the capital city of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Located on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal, it is the largest cultural, economic and educational centre of South India.

The traditional and de facto gateway of South India, Chennai is among the most-visited Indian cities by foreign tourists. It was ranked the 43rd-most visited city in the world for the year 2015 and was ranked the 36th-most visited city in the world for the year 2019. The Quality of Living Survey rated Chennai as the safest city in India. Chennai attracts 45 percent of health tourists visiting India, and 30 to 40 percent of domestic health tourists. As such, it is termed "India's health capital". Chennai has the fifth-largest urban economy of India.

Mahabalipuram

Mahabalipuram, is a town, best known for the UNESCO World Heritage Site of 7th- and 8th-century Hindu Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram. It is one of the famous tourist sites in India. Along with economic prosperity, it became the site of a group of royal monuments, many carved out of the living rock.

Marina Beach

Marina Beach is a natural urban beach in Chennai, along the Bay of Bengal. The beach runs from near Fort St. George in the north to Foreshore Estate in the south, a distance of 6 km making it the longest natural urban beach in the country and one of the longest in the world. It is one of the most crowded beaches in the country and attracts many visitors.

Dakshina Chitra

DakshinaChitra is a living history museum in Chennai. This museum has 18 houses put together to depict the culture, architecture, craft and lifestyle of all four South Indian states – Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh/Telangana and Karnataka – via more than 4000 .The exhibits portray the architecture, art, folk performing-arts and craft of South Indian traditions.

Valluvar Kottam

Chennai’s love for literature & culture is evident in this monument dedicated to the great Tamil saint, philosopher, and writer Tiruvalluvar. This monument, created by 3000 stone blocks, is in the shape of a chariot.

Guindy National Park

Guindy National Park is protected area of Tamil Nadu, located in Chennai, India, is the 8th-smallest National Park of India and one of the very few national parks situated inside a city.

Connemara Public library

The Connemara Public Library at Egmore in Chennai, is one of the four National Depository Libraries which receive a copy of all books, newspapers and periodicals published in India. Established in 1896, the library is a repository of century-old publications, wherein lie some of the most respected works and collections in the history of the country.

Crocodile Bank

The Madras Crocodile Bank Trust and Centre for Herpetology (MCBT) is a reptile zoo and herpetology research station, south of the city of Chennai, in state of Tamil Nadu, India.

Muttukadu

Muttukadu boat house is a water sport facility at Muttukadu, Chennai City, offering rowing, wind surfing, water skiing, and speedboat riding. It is a backwater area of the Bay of Bengal located 36 km from the city centre and 23 km from Adyar on the way to Mamallapuram. It is owned and operated by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC)

Semmozhi Poonga

Semmozhi Poonga, is a botanical garden in Chennai set up jointly by the Horticulture and Agricultural Engineering department of the Government of Tamil Nadu, the first botanical garden in the city. More than 500 species of plants are being grown in the area, some of them being more than 100 years old.

Arignar Anna Zoological Park

Arignar Anna Zoological Park (abbreviated AAZP), also known as the Vandalur Zoo, is a zoological garden located in Vandalur. Established in 1855, it is the first public zoo in India.

Currency

The Indian currency is called the Indian Rupee (INR) and the coins are called paise. One Rupee consists of 100 paise. Banknotes in India are currently being issued in the denomination of Rs 10, Rs 20, Rs 50, Rs 100, Rs 200, Rs 500 and Rs 2000. These notes are called banknotes as they are issued by the Reserve Bank of India (Reserve Bank).


Weather

India's climate is hot and humid. Winter, summer, Spring, Autumn are the four distinct seasons in India. It is a pleasant and beautiful season with an average temperature of 32 degree centigrade. It starts after the winter and lasts till summer starts. The day becomes longer and nights become shorter in this season. The average temperature remains around 38 degree centigrade. The days are longest in this season while the nights have the shortest duration. Due to the scorching sun and high temperature, the water level of ponds, rivers goes down and people including animals, birds, etc., feel uncomfortable and tends to stay inside as much as they could. As compared to the summer season, the days are short and nights are long in this season and the average temperature remains around 34 degree centigrade. Monsoon includes the months of July and August. It is sometimes called 'green season' by the officials of the tourism sector.

Indian Standard Time (IST), sometimes also called India Standard Time, is the time zone observed throughout India, with a time offset of UTC+05:30. India does not observe daylight saving time or other seasonal adjustments. In military and aviation time IST is designated E* ("Echo-Star").
